What does an HGV Technician actually do at Heathline Commercials

What does an HGV Technician actually do at Heathline Commercials?

When people hear the term HGV Technician, they may often picture someone changing tyres or servicing engines. While those jobs are obviously a part of the role, they only scratch the surface of what an HGV technician does on a day-to-day basis.

As you can imagine, no two days are ever the same. Our team of technicians play a vital role in keeping businesses moving by ensuring trucks, trailers, vans and commercial vehicles are safe, reliable and back on the road as quickly as possible.

More than just a mechanic

Modern commercial vehicles are packed with sophisticated technology. Today’s HGV Technicians need to be just as comfortable using laptops and diagnostic software as they are using spanners and socket sets.

From identifying complex electrical faults to carrying out major engine repairs, every job requires technical knowledge, practical skills and a methodical approach to problem-solving.

As vehicle technology continues to evolve, it’s a career where you’re constantly learning.

What does a typical day look like?

There is no such thing as a ‘normal day’ at Heathline, speak to any of our technicians and they will tell you that no two days are ever the same. After carrying out a routine service, they could then move on to:

-         Diagnosing electronic faults

-         Preparing vehicles for MOT inspection

-         Repairing braking, steering or suspension systems

-         Carrying out tachograph repairs and calibrations

-         Responding to vehicle breakdowns

-         Completing inspections to ensure vehicles meet DVSA Safety standards

Some jobs may be planned in advance and others require quick thinking to get a vehicle back on the road.

Every repair matters

Vehicles off the road mean missed deliveries, delayed jobs and lost income. Our team understand that and our technicians don’t just repair vehicles, they keep businesses operating.

Working with the latest technology

Commercial vehicles have changed dramatically over the last decade, with electronic braking systems, emissions technology and digital tachographs, meaning out technicians are continually developing new skills. That’s why we invest in the equipment and technology needed to diagnose faults quickly and accurately.
